Benefits of Volunteering

Joining the Eggertsville Hose Company offers a wealth of benefits, from comprehensive training and financial rewards to personal safety and community involvement. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect:

Quality Training for Free: Bring your commitment, and we’ll provide top-notch training at no cost. Our offerings range from local and county training to NYS certified courses, regional, and national seminars, and conferences. We’re dedicated to helping you excel in every aspect of emergency services.

Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP): This incentive rewards your dedication with a financial benefit. After five years of continuous active service, you become vested, enjoying a monthly stipend upon reaching retirement at 55, with maximum benefits after 40 years of service.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Your safety is our priority. We equip our firefighters with the latest in fire-resistant gear, including coats, pants, boots, gloves, hoods, and helmets, all personalized with your name, rank, and ID.

Dress Uniforms: Show your Eggertsville pride with a professional dress uniform, provided after a minimum service period, along with other apparel through a cost-sharing program.

Fire Station Facilities: Our fire station, dedicated in 1995, is not just a building but a community hub. Members enjoy access to our workout room, car wash bay, TV room, and spaces for socializing with fellow members.

Social Events: Celebrate achievements and build camaraderie through our annual installation dinner, conventions, parades, parties, family picnics, and holiday gatherings. Participate in our softball team or bowling league, cheer on at the demolition derby, or join the Santa run.

Benevolent Association: After probation, members can join the Eggertsville Fireman’s Benevolent Association, which offers financial assistance for healthcare expenses, hospital stay stipends, and support for indigent members.

Peace of Mind: Recognizing the inherent risks in firefighting, we provide extensive protection and support. This includes coverage under New York State’s Volunteer Fireman’s Benefit Law, Workmen’s Compensation, and supplemental insurance, ensuring your and your family’s financial security in case of injury or fatality. Annual comprehensive medical examinations, a firefighter fitness center, and access to the Public Safety EAP program for counseling and stress debriefing are all part of our commitment to your health, safety, and well-being.

At the Eggertsville Hose Company, we not only work hard but also play hard, all while ensuring the safety and support of our volunteers. Join us in making a difference in our community.

Recruitment Process

  1. Initial Interest: Begin by completing the online recruitment interest form. Once reviewed, a full Fire Department (FD) application will be sent to you, marking the start of your official “Application Submission” process. This application gathers personal information, references, and includes authorizations for driver’s license, criminal, arson background checks, and a sexual offender check as required by NYS Law. Note, a conviction for arson-related crimes disqualifies candidacy.

  2. Initial Reading: Your full FD application will be presented at the next general business meeting after its receipt.

  3. Membership Committee Interview: Following your application, you’ll be invited for an interview with the Membership Committee to discuss your motivations, experiences, and how you envision contributing to the team.

  4. Membership Decision: After your interview, alongside reference and background checks, the Membership Committee recommends your application to the general membership, which votes on acceptance by majority.

  5. Medical and Approval: Accepted members are required to pass a medical physical and receive fire district approval before actively responding to emergencies.

  6. Probationary Period: New members enter a minimum one-year probationary period, a valuable time for learning and integration into the team under seasoned members’ mentorship.

Recruitment Timeline

  • Interest Form Review: Your initial interest form is processed, leading to the full FD application phase.
  • Background Checks: Conducted post-application submission, these checks are reviewed upon completion.
  • Investigative Meeting: An interview with past department Chiefs is scheduled, allowing for mutual evaluation and questions.
  • Membership Approval: You will be informed of your membership status by the investigative committee.
  • Physical Exam: A required physical examination, including a chest x-ray, must be passed.
  • Official Induction: Approved members are formally invited to the next monthly meeting to be sworn in.

Your interest in joining the Eggertsville Hose Company is the first step towards making a meaningful impact in our community.
